Every culture in the world has its version of dumplings with sweet and savoury fillings showing aptly that dumplings are here to stay. You could call them little edible pockets of love. Today we want to take you beyond the Tibetan/Nepali momos and out into the world. Here are some of the dumplings that taste just as good.
1. Germany: Runsas
This is a round dumpling with a bread case for covering and is usually prepared with Beef and Cabbage.
2. Greece: Tiropitakia
Triangular in shape and made with phyllo dough and filled with cheese. It is baked to a nice golden finish and eaten hot.
3. Korea: Mandu
Filled with beef, pork and kimchi and steamed, it resembles other steamed Asian dumplings.
4. Sweden: Kroppkakor
Encased in a wheat and potato cover, these round dumplings are filled with sweet bacon or veggies and eaten with the native Lingonberry Jam.
5. Britain: Pasty
Pasty is an English snack made with a puff pastry casing and billed with savoury veggies and meat.
6. Cuba: Papa Rellenas
A hole is made in the whole potato and filled with meat and other veggies. This product called the Papa is then covered in a thin spiced flour batter and deep fried.
7. Mexico: Tamale
Tamales are one of the dumplings where the casing is not edible. Tamales are made of minced meat mixed with flour and steamed in corn Husk.
8. Eastern Europe: Knish
Potato is mixed with greens and used a filling with bread dough and baked. It is one carb loaded dish with the taste matching the rich ingredients.
9. Poland: Pierogi
Ideally filled with potato and nor more than two veggies, this dumpling is made with a yogurt dough a steamed. It is then pan fried in butter or olive oil.
10. Brazil: Coxinhas
Similar to croquettes, these dumpling are breaded and deep fried and usually have a chicken filling.
