6 incredibly tasty chicken recipes you never knew existed

A ubiquitous ingredient like chicken has, ‘not so surprisingly’, managed to secure a legendary status in the books of world cuisine. From the seasoned salads and the fiery flavours of the west, to the exotic flavours of the Middle East, the poulet has successfully managed to tickle the brains of the most imaginative chefs around the world.

Here is a list of 6 chicken recipes that you must try out at least once:

#1 Shahi Murg

For a creamy, nutty chicken curry, make a paste of pre-soaked almonds, cashews and green chilies. In a pan of hot oil, sauté garam masala, fennel seeds, ginger garlic paste and chopped onions. Once the onions are see through, add the almond-cashew-chili paste and coriander-cumin powder along with 1/4th cup of water, covering the pan and letting it cook for 15 minutes. Next, add the yogurt, chicken cubes, coconut milk, salt, white pepper powder and water and continue to keep it covered until the chicken is cooked through. Garnish this with finely chopped coriander and sliced almonds, and allow your taste buds to relish this creamy chicken delight.

#2 Butter Chicken

To recreate this simple, flavourful dish, marinate the chicken pieces in yoghurt, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, garam masala and chilli powder, and refrigerate it for two hours. In a pan of hot oil and butter, add chopped onions and stir occasionally until they have softened. Toss in the marinated chicken and cook until it starts to change colour. Add the tomato puree and chicken stock to the pan and bring it to a boil, stirring it occasionally on a low heat. Once the mixture has thickened and the chicken has cooked through, add cream and garnish it with coriander leaves. Your butter chicken is ready for consumption.

#3 Garlicky Greek Chicken

For this Greek garlic delight, coat chicken thighs in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and oregano, then cover the bowl and let it marinate in the fridge for two hours. Season both sides of the marinated chicken with salt and pepper and sear it skin-side down in olive oil, in a large ovenproof skillet, until the skin becomes golden and crispy. Toss in some chopped zucchini, lemons and asparagus, cook it in a pre-heated oven until the vegetables are tender, and voila, your Greek chicken goodness is ready to be served.

#4 Jerk Chicken

Marinate chicken pieces with a spice mixture of salt, allspice, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic, nutmeg, pepper, ginger, cayenne pepper, cinnamon and thyme, allowing it to rest in the fridge for 2 to 4 hours. Place the chicken pieces skin-side up in a baking dish with vegetable oil, baking it in a preheated oven (350 degrees F) for an hour and 20 minutes until the meat is no longer pink near the bone. Finally, broil it and allow it to cook until the skin crisps. Prepare to bite into this dish of sweet and spicy goodness.

#5 BBQ Power Bowls

Heat oil in a large skillet over a medium flame, adding in chicken seasoned with salt and pepper. Combine barbecue sauce, orange juice, cumin, chili powder, two cloves of garlic, and pour this sauce over the cooked chicken breasts, continuing to cook it until the sauce has reduced slightly. Once done, slice the chicken in to cubes and let it cool completely. Whisk together mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, mustard and garlic, and pour this over chopped kale, cabbage and carrots, seasoning it with salt and pepper. Finally, divide rice evenly in 3 bowls, add in the chicken and slaw, garnish it with barbecue sauce, and your power packed barbecue bowls are good to go.

#6 One-Pan Balsamic Chicken and Asparagus

Whisk together balsamic vinegar, oil, honey, mustard, garlic and red pepper flakes and set it aside. In a large skillet, heat oil over a medium heat and sear the chicken, seasoned with salt and pepper, until it’s golden brown on either side. Pour the vinaigrette over the chicken and set it aside. In a pan, cook asparagus and tomatoes, seasoned with salt and pepper, until the asparagus is bright green and the tomatoes slightly wilted. Toss the chicken and the vegetables together and allow it to cook until the vinaigrette has thickened slightly. There you have it- one-pan balsamic chicken and asparagus ready to be eaten.
